As an industrial designer, I love studying master drawings.

There is so much that can be learned in how to convey ideas more effectively and in how to capture emotion.

Below are studies based on combining the techniques of different masters to help visualize ideas in new ways.

  • Albrecht Durer - Rhino life size study. How did Durer depict a subject so realistically that he had only seen through other artist's drawings? What would this look like in full size?

  • Leonardo DaVinci - Virgin of the Rocks. The angel, Uriel, looks out toward the viewer. How could altering his expression help convey what he is saying? My sketch experiments with a more frontal gaze with direct eye contact and his finger pointing slightly upward. As the angel of prophesy and wisdom, he urges us to understand.

  • Michelangelo - Studies of Two Apostles. What are the emotions of being chosen? How would it make you feel? I have attempted to show the younger man receiving this news much more seriously.

  • Teaching boys to draw dragons

    Teaching my boys to draw dragons. Learning from Leonardo's and Durer's studies of known animals to convey new ones.

  • Field Museum - Real rhino comparison showing the extent to which Durer used his imagination to visualize something he had never actually seen. While Durer's armor was invented, his massing is virtually perfect.
